Winter Sports On Kefalonia |
Jane Keene |

We are thinking of a short-break stay on Kefalonia to see what the island is like in Winter.
Is there snow—if so will we be able ski ? What other winter sports are there ?
What is the best way of getting to Kefalonia out of season?
We’re getting excited already ! |

The only area you can be fairly sure of snow over winter is at altitudes above 1,100 feet on Mount Ainos. This area is a National Park. It is difficult to predict the first snow on the mountain but once there, especially on the north-facing slopes, the snow tends to stay until March/April. There has been snow on these slopes for a few weeks now.
There are no skiing facilities—indeed we are not aware of any runs long or clear enough to facilitate skiing. Locals often use plastic bin-bags as make-shift toboggans !
The nearest popular skiing resort to Kefalonia is Kalavryta, about 85kms east of Patras, on the mainland. Patras is about 2.5 hours by ferry from Kefalonia.

There are no U.K. direct flights to Kefalonia during the winter months.
There are many flights from the U.K. to Athens—the cheapest of which are often available via EasyJet. Your onward journey to Kefalonia could be via coach and ferry (inexpensive) or via Olympic Airways island shuttle. At present the Athens-Kefalonia air fare is €60 single.
You could always, of course, visit Kefalonia at this time of the year just to enjoy the fabulous scenery and the emerging wild flowers. The island is peaceful and beautiful.
