Some friends of mine have just returned from Spartia and mentioned that there was a wild-fire near where they were staying.

As we are hoping to move to Kefalonia I need to know what the risks are of fire damaging property.

As in most Mediterranean countries there is a risk of wildfires. 

However, the advent of the mobile phone has resulted in fires being reported whilst still in their early stages.  Most of the population seems to carry a mobile (even the

humblest shepherd sports a cell-phone !) and the fire brigade are quickly on the scene.

The island has two ‘resident’ fire-planes and further support, where necessary, comes by way of mainland fireplanes and helicopters.

We are not aware of any damage to property or souls during the recent fire, which was successfully extinguished within a couple of hours.

It would, nevertheless, be prudent to insure your property against fire from any source—be it external or internal.
