What are the water charges like? Is water very expensive? (running a pool etc). |

Water usage is metered at each household and bills are sent every two months. While costs may vary slightly across the island you can budget on between €20 and €25 per two months. This includes a standing charge of around €4.50 and assumes full occupancy of the property by a small family.
Direct mains water (i.e. not held in household reserve tanks ) is safe to drink: some would say it’s positively healthy.
The ‘rainy season’ saturates the sub-strata and the water is filtered through differing soils/rocks depending upon location. As the water comes from very localised springs and pumping-stations there is a discernable difference in the flavour of water in different parts of the island.
Whilst there is abundant water available the mains system can only cope with a finite flow—this can lead to low pressure in heavy water-usage periods.
If you intend to fill your pool it is prudent to mention this in advance to the local council. Allow about €300 to fill a standard swimming pool. |
