I am coming out to furnish my new house in November. Do you have contacts of stores who will deliver to the house from either mainland or locally ? We are finding it hard to find such a retailer.
How do I obtain my official address as the new house is outside the village and on a secondary road. How will utility bills reach me ?
Apart from the ferry-link from Sami to Patras what is the best way to get to the island in winter?

Kefalonia has a shopping culture all of its own ! Despite local stores denying that there is a delivery service it is noticeable that all houses seem to have beds, settees, etc. in them—so how do they all get there ?
A few stores will have there own transport (Don’t be surprised if your 3 piece arrives on the back of a tractor with the whole family accompanying it !). At worst you can hire a taxi-truck. These trucks are readily available for short-term use—similar to ordinary taxis, and the driver loads up and drives wherever you wish. Larger items tend to be cheaper from either Athens or Patras. In this case the stores are set up to deliver to the islands and you arrange to pick up the goods at a local collection depot.
Your official address will have been established on your planning permission application. However, don’t worry. It’s a small community and the postman will know about you long before you move in ! If you’re living in the villages the postman may only deliver a couple of times a week. You can opt for a P.O. Box (a mini safe, with your own key) at the local post office. This works well but you have to check for the post regularly. The postman will not deliver once you’ve established a P.O. Box.
Finally, the easiest way to get to Kefalonia out-of-season.
With the new Athens airport now on the east side of Athens it has become an even more tiresome journey by land and sea.
We recommend using the Olympic Airways ‘Island-Hopper’ service. It’s about an hour from Athens to Kefalonia. If you’re already flying Olympic from Britain then you have the advantage of not having to deal with your luggage transferring between flights in Athens. |
