Legally, the need for a Residence Permit (for E.U. citizens) ceased on 1st. January 2006.
This is, however, a small-island community and old habits die hard. Some locals still insist on your producing a residence permit.
You may well be asked for one if you own/rent property where the service bills are in your name. Some Town Hall staff still ask for the permit when setting up details for water bills.
You have a choice - appeal to the European Court (and wait a few years for a result) or just give in to tradition and produce the document !!
A Residence Permit can still be obtained from the local police station if you go armed with 5 passport photo's and your passport.
You will be required to sign many forms declaring your purpose in Greece but it is all relatively straight-forward and costs about a Euro. |
