We have just returned from a fabulous holiday on Kefalonia. One thing we did notice was that there were no fruit machines in the hotels, bars or restaurants. Is this a local law ?

It’s a National law !
About two years ago the Greek government banned gambling generally—with the exception of New Years Eve, when everybody gets together to play cards for money, cars ferries—whatever ! ‘Lotto’-style scratch cards and the National Lottery are the only overt form of gambling allowed.
Greek bars are different altogether to British bars. The Greek teens-and-twenties pub-goers are just as likely to be seen sipping coffee or cola. Excessive drinking of alcohol is rare. Whilst some bars do provide ‘disco’ style music many more play Greek popular music or have live Greek bands.
Bars, restaurants and café’s in Greece are venues for all the family—from babies to Grannies !
