I am nearing retirement but cannot afford to retire in

England.

Could you give me a guide as to long-term rental and living costs.

How much are second-hand cars on the island ?

Is it possible to get Sky television ?

Are there direct flights to Kefalonia all-year or would I need to go via Athens ?

We can only approximate on costs as individuals’ needs can vary considerably.

It should be fairly easy to long-term-rent a small apartment for around €300 per month.  If you lack personal transport we suggest that you choose to live near to, or in, one of the towns.  This avoids the need for public transport when you want to go shopping.  There is no ‘council-tax’ so the cost of living entirely depends upon your style of living.  Day to day costs have been equated to about 2/3 British prices.

Second-hand prices for small cars tend to be in the region of €4,000 for a five year-old car.  Tax for a small car is about €100 per year with an M.O.T. every two years on, and after, the car’s fifth birthday.  Expect to pay about €200 for third party insurance.

Sky television transmission can be received in Greece.

Beware—This is a very sensitive issue—and we can only refer you to our ‘Useful Links’ for the official position

regarding Sky subscriptions.

Direct flights to Kefalonia are only available via package-tour companies during the holiday season. During the winter you would need to travel via the Olympic ‘Island-Hopper’ to Athens.  EasyJet flies daily to Athens from

Gatwick and Luton.  British Airways, Olympic and Virgin all fly direct between Athens and England.

If you choose Olympic you have the advantage of not having to deal with your luggage transferring between flights in Athens.
