Child-minding employment |

I am moving to Kefalonia in the near future with my husband and two of my children. I have been a registered child-minder (registered with OFSTED) for the last seven years.
Can anyone tell me if child-care in Kefalonia is well organised and if my services would be of use on the island ?
Obviously the Greeks do things differently, with extended families etc. They really seem to value family life.
I’d be chuffed if someone with local knowledge could offer any help or advice.
I’ve been studying the Greek language for nearly two years and so, hopefully, language should not be a problem. |

Due to the steady increase in ‘working Mums’ on the island there is a developing demand for child-care facilities, and there are a number of privately run nurseries.
Generally these nurseries run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offer breakfast, lunch and refreshments. They will look after a child from two months old.
We’re not sure whether the Greek authorities will immediately accept your qualifications (there is a general reluctance to accept ANY non-Greek document !).
We recommend contacting the Greek Embassy in London for a definitive answer. See ‘Paperwork for Greece’ on our Useful Links page….
Language could be a problem (dealing with medical emergencies etc.) and a good grasp of basic Greek would be essential for your own peace-of-mind. However, there is a growing British population and it is worth exploring the ‘child-minding English children’ potential.
If anybody on Kefalonia can help Tonia further please send an e-mail to us and we’ll forward it on.
