Buying Privately - Worried About Paperwork |
Pete Taylor |
26/06/03 |
Whilst on our latest visit to Kefalonia my wife and I were offered a plot of land being sold privately by a farmer.
We have paid a deposit but have since heard disturbing stories about possible problems with land ownership and planning permission for building a house.
Is there any way you could help us find out where we Stand ?

Land ownership in Greece becomes a very complicated issue: especially where, over many years, land has been inherited and ownership and boundaries have been ill-recorded.
Planning permission can be a lengthy process but should be addressed before you commit yourself to buying any land.
The island’s lawyers deal with land transfer but it is up to the buyer, or his representative, to instruct precisely what is required and to monitor the situation at each stage.
Unless you are fluent in Greek you run the risk of legal and financial mis-understandings.
Beware of ’casual’ estimates on building costs!
We, at Kefalonian Homes, deal with all this as part of our service to our customers.
We now offer this same service to people buying via private sales or other agents. Please see the ‘Our Services’ page.
Please feel free to contact us again and we will be happy to act as your representative.
